Lutron Grafik Eye Fault or Error Code? We Know These Units Inside Out.

The Grafik Eye QS is a brilliant but specialist piece of Lutron hardware, and when it develops a zone error or throws a blink code, it takes someone who truly knows the product to diagnose it properly. That's us.

Sound familiar?

Your Grafik Eye's zone LEDs are flashing in a pattern you've never seen, a zone has stopped working entirely, or the unit is behaving erratically after years of faultless operation. Finding someone who genuinely understands the Grafik Eye QS can feel almost impossible.

Zone LED is blinking in a repeating pattern

One or more zone LEDs on your Grafik Eye QS are flashing on and off at roughly three times per second, with a specific number of blinks followed by a pause. This is a zone error blink code — the unit is telling you exactly what's wrong. One blink means an over-current fault, two blinks indicate a phase-control incompatibility, three blinks signal a shorted component, and four blinks indicate an over-temperature condition.

A zone has stopped responding entirely

You select a scene and one zone doesn't react — the lights stay stuck at their current level or remain off. The zone may have tripped an internal protection circuit due to an over-current condition, or there may be a wiring fault between the Grafik Eye and that specific lighting circuit.

The Grafik Eye display is blank or garbled

The backlit LCD display on the front of your Grafik Eye QS is either completely dark, showing corrupted text, or flickering. This can indicate a power supply issue, a firmware corruption, or an LCD backlight failure — usually repairable without replacing the entire unit.

Scenes aren't recalling correctly

You press a scene button and the lights go to different levels than they should, or some zones don't respond while others do. The scene programming may have become corrupted, or the zone assignments may have shifted after a power event or firmware glitch.

The Grafik Eye buzzes or hums audibly

Your Grafik Eye unit itself is producing an audible hum or buzz from behind the faceplate. This is typically caused by the internal transformers or the dimming circuitry interacting with the connected load — particularly after switching from halogen to LED light sources.

IR remote or wall station controls no longer work

Your infrared remote or wired wall station can no longer control the Grafik Eye — pressing buttons does nothing. The IR sensor may have been obscured, the wall station wiring may have a fault, or the Grafik Eye's wireless mode may have been inadvertently disabled.

How We Fix Lutron Grafik Eye Faults

Specialist diagnosis and repair from engineers who know every Grafik Eye error code.

1

Remote Assessment

We ask you to count the exact blink pattern on the affected zone LED and describe any other symptoms. With this information, we can usually identify the error code and probable cause before visiting — and arrive with the right replacement components if needed.

2

On-Site Diagnosis

We open the Grafik Eye QS unit, test each zone's output circuitry, measure load characteristics, check for wiring faults, and verify that the connected light sources are compatible with the unit's dimming type. We also check the QS link connection if the unit is part of a wider HomeWorks or RadioRA system.

3

Fix & Calibrate

We clear the error condition, repair or replace any faulty zone dimming circuitry, adjust phase-control settings if there's an LED compatibility issue, and reprogramme scenes if needed. For over-temperature errors, we check the unit's ventilation and loading to prevent recurrence.

4

Test & Handover

We test every zone across its full dimming range, verify all scenes recall correctly, confirm IR remote and wall station functionality, and ensure the unit is communicating properly with any connected processor. You receive a written summary of the error codes found and the work completed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The zone LEDs flash in a specific pattern to indicate error types. One blink followed by a pause indicates an over-current error (the zone is drawing too much power). Two blinks indicate a phase-control type that's incompatible with the connected load. Three blinks signal a shorted component in the zone circuit. Four blinks indicate an over-temperature condition. Five blinks mean the over-temperature scale-back failed and the unit has shut down that zone for protection. The LEDs will continue flashing until the error is resolved.

In most cases, yes. Zone errors are typically caused by external factors — an incompatible LED bulb, an overloaded circuit, a short in the wiring, or insufficient ventilation causing overheating. Once the underlying cause is addressed, the error can be cleared by turning the zone off completely and back on, or by power-cycling the unit. If the zone's internal dimming circuitry has been damaged by a sustained fault, that specific component may need replacing — but this is still a repair, not a full unit replacement.

The Grafik Eye QS uses adaptive dimming that can operate in forward-phase (leading-edge) or reverse-phase (trailing-edge) modes. Many LED bulbs and drivers require reverse-phase dimming for stable, flicker-free operation. If the Grafik Eye zone is set to forward-phase and you install LEDs that prefer reverse-phase, you'll get flickering, buzzing, or error codes. We can change the dimming mode via the unit's programming and adjust the low-end trim to match your specific LED bulbs.

The Grafik Eye QS is still a current Lutron product and is fully supported. It integrates with HomeWorks QS, HomeWorks QSX, and RadioRA 2 systems via the QS link. Older Grafik Eye models (the original Grafik Eye 3000/4000 series) are legacy products, but the hardware remains functional and repairable. We support all Grafik Eye generations.

Over-temperature errors (four-blink pattern) occur when the unit's internal temperature exceeds safe operating limits. Common causes include: the unit being installed in an enclosed space without adequate ventilation, zones being loaded beyond their rated capacity, or high ambient temperatures in the room. Each Grafik Eye QS zone is rated for a specific wattage — if you've increased the number of bulbs on a circuit, you may have exceeded the zone's capacity. We measure the actual load and advise on the best solution.

Yes. If the Grafik Eye is a standalone unit (not connected to a HomeWorks or RadioRA processor), scenes can be programmed directly on the unit using its front-panel controls. If it's integrated into a wider system via QS link, scene programming is done through Lutron Designer software connected to the processor. Either way, we can add, modify, or replace any scene programming, adjust fade rates, and configure the scene buttons to suit your preferences.

Not necessarily. A blank display can be caused by a failed LCD backlight (the unit may still be functioning and controlling lights even without the display), a power supply issue delivering insufficient voltage to the display circuitry, or a firmware corruption. We can diagnose whether the display fault is cosmetic or indicative of a deeper issue. In many cases, the display can be repaired without replacing the entire Grafik Eye unit.
