You press 'Watch TV' on your Control4 app or touchscreen and nothing happens. The TV does not switch on, the Sky box does not respond, or your Apple TV is stuck on the wrong input. The entertainment side of your smart home has stopped working, even though the lights and heating are still fine.

Sky Q box no longer responds to Control4 commands

Your Sky Q was working perfectly through Control4 until a recent Sky software update. Now pressing the Sky button on your touchscreen or app does nothing — the box does not switch on, channels do not change, and the programme guide is inaccessible. The Sky remote still works directly, but Control4 has lost communication.

Apple TV updated and stopped working with Control4

Apple released a tvOS update and your Apple TV is no longer controllable from the Control4 interface. The IP driver shows 'Not Activated' or the IR commands are being ignored. Navigation, play/pause, and app selection have all stopped working through Control4.

TV does not switch on or is stuck on the wrong input

When you select 'Watch TV' or 'Watch Film', your television either does not power on at all, or it powers on but stays on the wrong HDMI input. The AV receiver or soundbar may also fail to switch. This is typically an IR or IP command sequence that has fallen out of sync after a device firmware update.

Sonos stopped appearing in the Control4 interface

Your Sonos speakers were fully integrated into Control4 — selectable in every room, controllable from the touchscreen. After a Sonos app update, they have vanished from the Control4 interface entirely. The Sonos app itself still works, but the integration is broken.

Streaming services like Netflix or Disney+ will not launch

You used to be able to launch Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Disney+ from your Control4 touchscreen. Now the buttons do nothing, or they launch the wrong app. The streaming device has updated its interface and the Control4 driver commands no longer map correctly.

Your AV system works manually but not through Control4

Picking up the individual remote controls for each device works fine — Sky, TV, Apple TV, soundbar — but controlling them through the Control4 touchscreen or app does not. This confirms the hardware is healthy and the issue is purely in the Control4 driver or command configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sky regularly pushes software updates to Sky Q boxes, and these updates occasionally change the way the box responds to IR or IP commands. When this happens, the Control4 driver — which sends specific command codes to control the Sky box — can stop working because the codes no longer match. The fix is to update the Control4 Sky Q driver to the latest version, which is configured for the current Sky software.

If your Apple TV is controlled via IP (network), yes — we can often update the driver and restore control remotely. If it is controlled via IR (infrared emitter), the driver update can still be done remotely, but if the IR emitter has moved or the Apple TV has been physically relocated, a site visit may be needed to reposition the emitter correctly.

Sonos app and firmware updates can break the integration between Sonos speakers and Control4. The Control4 Sonos driver communicates with the Sonos devices over your network, and when Sonos changes their API or network protocol, the driver loses contact. Updating to the latest certified Control4 Sonos driver typically restores full functionality, including browsing, playback control, and favourites.

In most cases it is a software problem. IR emitters are simple devices that rarely fail. However, if an emitter has come unstuck from the front of a device (they are attached with adhesive), or if a device has been moved, the emitter may no longer be pointing at the IR receiver. We check both the software configuration and the physical emitter placement during our diagnosis.

This is a Composer Pro programming task that we can often do remotely.

Control4 sends a sequence of commands when you select a source — power on the TV, switch to the correct HDMI input, power on the source device, and configure the audio output. If a TV firmware update has changed the input numbering or added a new 'home screen' that intercepts the input switch command, the sequence breaks. We reprogram the command sequence in Composer Pro to match your TV's current behaviour.
