Lutron Dimmer Flickering & Buzzing? We Fix It Fast.

Flickering or buzzing Lutron dimmers are almost always a load compatibility issue between your dimmer module and LED bulbs — not a system failure. We carry common replacement parts and resolve most cases in a single visit.

Sound familiar?

You dimmed the lights for the evening and now they won't stop flickering. Or there's an irritating buzz coming from behind the wall plate every time you set a scene. It's one of the most common Lutron faults we see — and one of the quickest to fix.

Lights flicker at low dimming levels

Your LEDs look fine at full brightness but start flickering or strobing as soon as you dim below 40-50%. This is a classic sign that your dimmer's minimum trim level needs adjusting, or the LED driver isn't compatible with your Lutron module.

Audible buzzing from the dimmer or light fitting

A persistent hum or buzz coming from behind the wall plate or from the light fitting itself. This is caused by electromagnetic interference between the dimmer's phase-cut waveform and the LED driver circuitry.

Lights 'ghost' or glow when switched off

You've turned the lights off but there's still a faint glow from the bulbs. Known as ghosting, this happens when residual current leaks through incompatible LED drivers — particularly common after switching from halogen to LED.

Lights drop out completely at certain levels

The lights cut out entirely when dimmed to a certain point, then pop back on when you raise the level. Your dimmer's low-end trim hasn't been calibrated for the minimum operating threshold of your LED lamps.

Different bulbs in the same circuit behave differently

Some bulbs in a group dim smoothly while others flicker or lag behind. Even bulbs from the same manufacturer can have batch variations in their drivers, causing inconsistent dimming across a single Lutron zone.

The problem started after changing to LED bulbs

Everything worked perfectly with the original halogen or incandescent lamps, but since switching to LEDs, the flickering and buzzing started. Your existing Lutron dimmer module may need reconfiguring or replacing with an LED-compatible variant.

How We Fix Lutron Dimmer Flickering

A straightforward process that resolves most flickering and buzzing issues in a single appointment.

1

Remote Assessment

We start with a phone or video call to understand your setup — which Lutron system you have (HomeWorks QS, QSX, Caseta, RadioRA), which dimmers are affected, and what bulbs you're using. This lets us arrive prepared with the right parts.

2

On-Site Diagnosis

We test your dimmer modules, check load types, measure minimum and maximum trim levels, and identify whether the issue is bulb compatibility, wiring, or a faulty dimmer module. We use Lutron's own diagnostic tools and LED compatibility data.

3

Fix & Calibrate

Depending on the diagnosis, we adjust low-end and high-end trim settings, swap incompatible dimmer modules for LED-rated variants, or recommend tested LED bulbs from Lutron's compatibility list. We carry common Lutron spares on every call-out.

4

Test & Handover

We test every affected zone across the full dimming range, verify all scenes operate without flicker or buzz, and walk you through what we changed. You'll also get a written summary of the work and our bulb recommendations for future reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common cause is a mismatch between your Lutron dimmer module and the LED bulb's driver circuitry. Lutron dimmers use phase-cut dimming (either leading-edge or trailing-edge), and not all LED bulbs respond well to this. The flickering typically appears at lower dimming levels where the LED driver can't sustain a stable output. The fix usually involves either adjusting the dimmer's low-end trim, switching to a Lutron-tested compatible LED, or replacing the dimmer module with an LED-optimised variant such as a Lutron PD-6WCL or the appropriate HomeWorks adaptive dimmer module.

In many cases, yes. Buzzing is often caused by the dimmer's phase-cut frequency interacting with the LED driver's circuitry, creating audible vibration. We can frequently resolve this by adjusting the trim levels, switching the dimming mode from forward phase (leading-edge) to reverse phase (trailing-edge), or recommending a different LED bulb that performs better with your specific Lutron module. If the dimmer module itself is faulty, we carry common Lutron spares and can replace it on the spot.

It's not dangerous, but it is a sign of current leakage — known as ghosting. This happens when a small amount of residual current passes through the dimmer circuit even when it's switched off, which is enough to faintly illuminate sensitive LED drivers. It's very common when older Lutron dimmers designed for halogen or incandescent loads are used with LEDs. The fix typically involves fitting a Lutron LUT-MLC minimum load capacitor across the circuit or upgrading to an LED-specific dimmer module.

Not necessarily. We test your existing bulbs against your specific Lutron dimmer modules to identify the exact incompatibility. Often, only certain zones need attention. We may recommend Lutron-tested LED bulbs from their compatibility tool for the affected circuits, while leaving zones that work well untouched. In some cases, swapping the dimmer module rather than the bulbs is the more cost-effective solution.

Yes. We support all generations of Lutron HomeWorks — from the original HomeWorks Interactive and Illumination systems through to HomeWorks QS and the latest QSX platform. We also work with Caseta, RadioRA 2, RadioRA 3, and Grafik Eye QS systems. Older systems may need specific legacy dimmer modules, which we source and carry for exactly these situations.

Most flickering issues are resolved in a single visit. Our call-out includes the diagnosis and any trim adjustments at no extra cost. If dimmer modules or additional components are needed, we'll quote these transparently before fitting. A typical single-zone dimmer module replacement including labour is significantly less than you might expect — and far less than the cost of replacing the entire system.

Some basic adjustments like changing the low-end trim can be done via the Lutron app or the dimmer's own controls, and we're happy to talk you through this over the phone during our initial assessment. However, if the issue is a module incompatibility or requires access to the processor programming through Lutron Designer software, that requires professional tools and training. We'll always tell you honestly if it's something you can handle yourself.
