Sound familiar?

Your Lutron HomeWorks system has worked beautifully for years — maybe even decades. Now something's gone wrong, and every company you call says the same thing: 'That system's obsolete. You need a full upgrade.' We disagree. Here's what you're probably hearing.

You've been told your system is 'end of life' and can't be repaired

Your HomeWorks Interactive or Illumination system has developed a fault, and every dealer you contact tells you it's unsupported and the only option is a £30,000-£80,000+ upgrade to HomeWorks QSX. This isn't true. The hardware is robust and repairable — what's ended is Lutron's official software support, not the system's functional life.

Your original installer has retired or closed their business

The company that installed your system ten or fifteen years ago is no longer trading. You can't find anyone willing to work on a legacy HomeWorks system because most Lutron dealers only support current-generation products. You're stuck with a fault and seemingly no one to call.

You've been quoted tens of thousands for an upgrade you don't want

Dealers have quoted you for a complete HomeWorks QSX upgrade — new processor, new keypads, new dimmer modules, full rewiring, reprogramming. The cost is staggering, and your existing system was working perfectly until this one fault appeared. You just want it fixed, not replaced.

The processor has failed and you've been told parts don't exist

Your HomeWorks Interactive processor has crashed or died, and you've been told replacement processors are unavailable. In many cases, the existing processor can be repaired — the internal battery replaced, the operating system reloaded, or a component-level repair carried out. We have the tools, software, and knowledge to do this.

You need to add or change something but nobody will touch it

You want to modify a scene, add a new keypad, change a zone assignment, or integrate a new device — but no dealer will programme a legacy system. They'll only take on the work if you upgrade the entire platform first. We programme legacy HomeWorks systems regularly.

Lutron themselves have directed you to upgrade

You contacted Lutron's technical support and they confirmed that HomeWorks Interactive and Illumination are legacy products with no ongoing support. They recommended contacting a dealer about upgrading to QSX. This is Lutron's official position, but it doesn't mean your system can't be maintained independently.

How We Support Legacy Lutron HomeWorks Systems

Independent Lutron specialists who maintain what others won't touch.

1

Remote Assessment

We discuss your system generation (Interactive, Illumination, or early QS), the fault you're experiencing, and your goals — whether that's a simple repair, ongoing maintenance, or a phased, cost-effective modernisation path that doesn't require ripping everything out.

2

On-Site Diagnosis

We connect to your legacy processor using the original HomeWorks Interactive (HWI) or Illumination software — tools we still maintain and operate. We diagnose the specific fault, assess the overall health of your system, and identify any components approaching end of life.

3

Fix & Resolve

We repair the fault — whether it's a processor battery replacement, a database reload, a keypad repair, a dimmer module swap, or a wiring fix. For HomeWorks Interactive processors, we can replace the internal TL-5135 backup battery, reload the operating system, and restore your database. We source legacy parts where needed.

4

Test & Handover

We test the full system thoroughly, take a fresh database backup for safekeeping, and discuss any preventative maintenance that would extend your system's life further. If you're interested in a gradual upgrade path, we can advise on phased approaches that preserve your existing investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — it's a legacy product, which means Lutron no longer sells it or provides official software support, but the hardware itself is extremely well-built and can last decades with proper maintenance. HomeWorks Interactive processors, keypads, and dimmer modules are robust commercial-grade components. What's ended is Lutron's sales and development of the product — not its ability to function. We have the original HWI software and the expertise to maintain these systems indefinitely.

HomeWorks Interactive was Lutron's first-generation whole-home lighting system, launched in the early 2000s. HomeWorks Illumination followed as a direct upgrade using the same device types but an improved processor. HomeWorks QS introduced a new digital communication protocol (the QS link) with new keypads and modules. HomeWorks QSX is the current platform with enhanced processing power, better app integration, and Lutron's latest Sunnata keypads. Each generation offers improvements, but earlier systems remain fully functional.

Many parts are still available through specialist sourcing, and we maintain our own stock of common legacy components. HomeWorks Interactive and Illumination keypads, dimmer modules, and power supplies are robust and rarely fail — but when they do, we can source replacements. For processors, we can often repair the existing unit rather than replace it. In cases where a specific part is truly unavailable, we can advise on compatible alternatives.

Not unless you want to. If your current system does everything you need and the only issue is a repairable fault, there's no technical reason to replace it. Upgrading to QSX makes sense if you want new features (better app control, voice assistant integration, the latest keypad designs), if you're doing a major renovation anyway, or if your legacy hardware has reached a point where ongoing repairs are becoming uneconomic. We'll give you an honest assessment — not a sales pitch.

Yes, and this is an approach we often recommend. You can upgrade the processor to HomeWorks QS while retaining your existing keypads and dimmer modules using Lutron's legacy device licences. This gives you modern app control and cloud connectivity while preserving your installed hardware. The licence cost is approximately £1,500 per device type (one for keypads, one for wired dimmers), which is a fraction of a full QSX replacement. We can advise on whether this hybrid approach suits your system.

Yes. We maintain and operate the original HomeWorks Interactive (HWI) and HomeWorks Illumination programming software. We can modify scenes, add or remove keypads, adjust zone assignments, change timeclock schedules, and make any other programming changes your system supports. This is one of our key differentiators — most companies have moved on from legacy Lutron software, but we've deliberately kept these tools operational.

In most cases, we can recover it. The most common failure mode is the internal backup battery (a Tadiran TL-5135) dying, which causes the processor to lose its database during any power interruption. We replace the battery and reload the database. If the processor has suffered a more serious hardware fault, we can attempt component-level repair or source a replacement unit and programme it with your existing database. A complete processor failure requiring replacement is uncommon.
